Z imbabwe Young Positives (ZY+) commemorates the International Youth Day (IYD), a United Nations initiative, observed on 12 August every year. The event aims to celebrate and articulate the voices, actions and initiatives of youths and give them an opportunity to be meaningfully, universally and equitably engaged. ZY+ being a youth-led organisation for the youths therefore joins the world in commemorating the day every year.
This year’s IYD, celebrated under the theme Youth Engagement for Global Action, mainly focuses on the engagement of young people at local, national and global levels. It seeks to highlight how the universal engagement of youths is influencing national and multilateral institutions and processes as well as draw lessons on how their representation and engagement in formal institutional politics can be significantly engaged.
In commemoration of the IYD, ZY+ has been engaged in various online discussions and activities designed to enunciate youths’ voices, actions and initiatives and to create a platform for dialogue between global decision makers and young people from different backgrounds and regions.
ZY+ National Coordinator, Anna Sango, had been engaged in the Y+ Digital Campaign discussion held on the 10th of August 2020 under the theme Engagement of adolescent girls and young women in leadership, with the First lady of Namibia and representatives from UNAIDS and Her Voice Fund. The objective of the discussion was to explore how engagement of AGYW in leadership and advocacy was like back then and how engagement in leadership and decision making currently looks like. It was also focusing on the challenges being faced by AGYW and interventions which are currently in place now and how are they supporting their engagement in leadership and decision-making sp
ZY+ being an advocate of adolescent and young people living with HIV (A&YPLHIV) is conducting an online campaign where A&YPLHIV sent pictures of them holding placards with messages calling to action multilateral institutions to make youth engagement, participation and representation a reality. These pictures have therefore been consolidated into a video which is being circulated on social media.
